Home Accessories Tips

Art looks better when hung lower, rather than higher, even if you have tall ceilings. An exception to this would be if you are adding art above a cabinet or door to raise the perception of height. A rule to follow is to keep the center at around eye level. This means the average eye level of around 60 inches to 66 inches. If you are a tall person, than obviously you will be hanging your art lower than your own eye level in order to look good. If you are hanging over a sofa, table, or bed the piece or pieces should be no more than around 9 to 12 inches above the furniture, depending on the size or group.

Do not be afraid to mix and match frames and textures. Finishes do not have to match, but should coordinate with each other. You can add a display shelf into your grouping for more interest. Your walls are a reflection of who you are.

Let us say that you will be hanging your art so its center is at 62 inches above the floor. First mark the wall with your pencil at 62 inches in the spot you would like to hang. Let’s say the frame measures 24 inches high by 36 inches wide. The center of this piece is 12 inches from the top and bottom.

Feng Shui Home Design Tips

Feng shui is the ancient Chinese philosophy of the energy and flow of objects as they relate to one another, to nature and the world around them. In decorating and design, the tenets of feng shui translate to the placement of elements, such as windows and doors, and the way in which interior spaces are utilized. The flow of any well-designed feng shui space should be open and uncluttered.

Color

  • Color is very important to temperament and therefore of concern to those seeking to craft calming interior spaces. Red, a color that correlates to the element fire, should be used sparingly in feng shui spaces because red represents stress, pressure and the more tumultuous elements of living. Lighter, more airy and natural colors that evoke the elements of wind and water are preferable and help to create a positive flow in living spaces.

Shape

  • Feng shui eschews the use of hard shapes, such as squares and rectangles, in favor of more elegant, curving shapes. Hard shapes produce hard edges that upset the overall flow of a space. Use rounded shapes in furniture, such as tables, when possible and when square or rectangular objects are inevitable, look for those with rounded edges. Avoid bringing knickknacks with hard edges into the space, with the exception of books, which represent knowledge and understanding but should still be used sparingly.

Clutter

  • Clutter should be avoided in feng shui spaces because clutter creates too much interest and upsets the flow of interior spaces. Paired objects are ideal when possible, but large groups of any item should be avoided. Candlesticks that come in pairs, for instance, are ideal in feng shui spaces.

Nature

  • Bring the elements of nature into feng shui spaces with mirrors, music and chimes, water and house plants. Leave windows exposed or covered lightly, allowing natural light into the space. Use natural woods, such as bamboo, and avoid an abundance of hard or man-made materials such as metal, plastic and glass. Wooden furniture in gentle shapes is ideal for the feng shui environment. Hide hints of the influence of humans, such as technology, so it cannot be seen when not in use.

Placement

  • The placement of large objects are of importance in feng shui spaces. Because large objects can affect or block the flow of energy in the space, they should be positioned to allow for the most openness. According to Home Decorating Reviews, furniture should be positioned to create winding passage areas to confuse evil spirits believed to only walk straight pathways. Always place furniture facing other pieces, but never so close together that they create a cluttered space.

Maximise Your Using of Natural Light and Warmth

Living in the Southern hemisphere it is better if the living areas of your house face towards the North. The extra light will make these spaces more enjoyable to live in and increase your thermal comfort in winter. But to avoid the burning summer sun you should have 90 centimetre window and door overhangs which will provide shade during those hot months and allow maximum penetration of sunlight in the winter. You should also have lower window sills in living areas to allow maximum penetration of sunlight in winter. Finally whenever possible avoid putting garages or storage spaces on the North side of houses as it will reduce access to sunlight for other areas of the home.
